How to write balanced net ionic equations?

Write balanced ionic equations for the following reactions: a) zinc and an acid (net) b) nitric acid and?

  • a) zinc and an acid (net) b) nitric acid and water c) hydrogen chloride and ammonia d) ionization of phosphoric acid (1st stage) e) sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid (net) f) copper (II) oxide and sulfuric acid (net) g) carbon dioxide and water h) ammonia and water i) self-ionization of ammonia j) solutions of barium chloride and sodium sulfate Any answers are appreciated!!!!

  • Answer:

    a) zinc and an acid This is a metal + acid ----> salt + hydrogen gas reaction Zn(s) + 2H+(aq) ----> Zn(aq) + H2(g) b) nitric acid and water This is dilution of acid, which causes the acid to dissociate in water. HNO3(aq) ----> H+(aq) + NO3-(aq) c) hydrogen chloride and ammonia Reaction to form aqueous ammonium chloride HCL(aq) + NH3(l) ---> NH4+(aq) + Cl-(aq) d) ionization of phosphoric acid (1st stage) Once again, this is dissociation of acid. H3PO4(aq) ----> H+(aq) + H2PO4-(aq) e) sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid This is neutralisation, which has a standard ionic equation. H+(aq) + OH-(aq) ----> H2O(l) f) copper (II) oxide and sulfuric acid This is a base+acid reaction CuO(s) + 2H+(aq) ----> Cu2+(aq) + H2O(l) g) carbon dioxide and water Dissolving carbon dioxide in water to get carbonic acid. CO2(g) + H2O(l) ----> H2CO3(aq) h) ammonia and water Dissociation of ammonia in water to get aqueous ammonia (or ammonium hydroxide) NH3(l) + H2O(l) ---> NH4+(aq) + OH-(aq) i) self-ionization of ammonia This one I googled, and found on wiki :> 2NH3 (l) ----> NH4+ (aq) + NH2- (aq) j) solutions of barium chloride and sodium sulfate This is a precipitation reaction, caused by two solutions reacting to form insoluble precipitate Ba(aq) + SO42-(aq) ----> BaSO4(s) I included state symbols, which might be necessary :> Hope this helps.
