My dog has really, really bad separation anxiety?

Separation anxiety in youngest dog ? ( oldest dog died 4/5/2012)?

  • My oldest dog died due to having pneumonia with other things on top of that, ( had her pts 4/5/2012 ) my youngest dog is now showing signs of this separation anxiety. they were mates for 9yrs, age of both dogs are 12 and 9yrs. how can one help her deal with the separation anxiety? i don't want to make things worse by stuff i shouldnt be doing, im wanting to know how can i help her without making it worse? btw she sleeps in my bed ( as did my old dog from the moment i brought her, so 12yrs and a few months )

  • Answer:

Sorry for your loss, There are several medications approved for canine separation anxiety, a couple even by the FDA. Talk to your veterinarian about your options, a couple include: amitriptyline, alprazolam, clmoipramine. Some of these are the same, or similar to human medications. (anti-depressants, OCD, etc) Your vet may offer additional suggestions, like spending more time with her, more toys, perhaps even another companion. Best of luck
