Do employers really check if you have a degree?

How many people have secured good jobs on the basis of fake degree?

  • In this latest news in the link below, Yahoo CEO lied that he has degree in computer science. Every now and then I keep reading similar stories of people in high positions being exposed of having fake degree. A lot of young college grads can't even find a job, yet the fake and impostors secure highly skilled and technical jobs. Various employees of federal government, school administrations, and even people working in law enforcement have been found to have fake degree. Why don't these employers check if the degree is real or fake? I think this is an insult to all the young college grads who worked so hard to get a degree only to find out there is no job. Resignation doesn't sound enough. I think they should be jailed for some time at minimum. What is your opinion?

  • Answer:

Of course that can never happen in Australia because anyone applying for a job that requires a degree has to produce proof,& it must be from a recognised Australian institution(or a few countries like England e.g.) I have been shocked at what I've read about people in the USA setting themselves up as psychiatrists & psychologists,GPs & other essential services with either no degree or one obtained online or through the mail.It is totally wrong & should be dealt with severely by the authorities.

If a person who lies their way into a good job manages to hold on to it, I'm not sure whether the accusing finger should be pointed toward their dishonesty or to the intrinsic value of academic credentials in general. Edit - I'm of an age where academic credentials and employment are irrelevant to me personally. I have the luxury of viewing the world from a non-vested and philosophical point of view - it one of the few benefits afforded to someone in Act lV of their life.

Because they don't do the background check that they require for lower ranking employees. It is stupid and the Board should be held accountable.

Even if you do not use what you majored in on your job, you also learn many other things that are valuable to employers. Writing and communication skills and and how to analyze and solve problem are learned and even computer skills even if your major has no practical applications. Some people can learn these things without a formal education, and so can successfully fake a degree, but then it does not matter.

College degrees can be overrated . I think it's funny if these people can B.S. their way to the top and make good employees. Edit: No fake degree . I own my own business and have seen how lame some of the people with degrees are . If someone can do the job without a degree , I don't have a problem with that .
