What's the best Johnnie Walker whiskey?

Tasting notes between Jack Daniels and Johnnie Walker (or other scotch)?

  • Can anyone explain the difference in taste between Jack Daniels bourbon whiskey and Johnnie Waker scotch both mixed with coke and on the rocks? Before you start going on about the fact that they're too different, let me just say that I'm well aware of that and I know about the difference in the production of the two. This is simply about a personal taste and general tasting notes of each! Also which of the two do you find smoother, stronger, better tasting and easier to drink? Personally I find bourbon whiskey too sweet, especially Jack Daniels. But I've never had scotch and was wondering about these things! Thanks!

Don't Bother with Johnnie walker it's a really poor tasting whisky. If you want to give scotch a go try the bottles Glenmorangie Original, Ardbeg 10 or Macallan 10. Though with scotch it you generally don't mix it with coke because it mixes really poorly. Between JD and JW I'd prefer JD's because I really dislike JW. Though if you've never had it before you should give it a go because some people really like it, just in my opinion don't expect to be blown away. If you want some tasting notes: JW Red Label: Bland but not bad flavours, malty sweetness, slight honey, very cheap alcohol taste and burn. JW Black Label: Bold but obnoxious flavours, some nasty burnt caramel and orange peel flavour that makes me hate the drink, doesn't taste cheep like the red label but I hate the flavour.

I agree with you. Jack Daniels is an american style whiskey, with a lot of the sweetness and vanilla that is common to bourbons or kentucky/tennessee whiskeys. I'm not sure HOW much you know about scotch. They break down by region and quality. Generally single malts being much more sought after than say a blended scotch like Johnnie Walker. I love a good well aged single malt scotch, but for a low end scotch johnnie walker is just fine with me. I don't have any to mix with coke right now or else i'd go give it a try for you ;) but i would have to say you'd want to keep scotch away from a mixer. Usually you just add a few ice cubes or a splash of water to scotch as opposed to a coke product. If you've never had scotch my recommendation would be Macallan 12. Its a wonderful place to start. There are so so many wonderful scotch's out there. I would just start trying some or make friends with a bar tender who has a good selection and knows his/her stuff to get a good feel for them.
