I want to learn to play guitar.

I want to learn how to play the guitar?

  • Hey guys, I am 15 going on 16, and I really want to know something about learning the guitar. Do you believe, it is easier to learn how to play the guitar very well at a younger age, such as mine, or in your university or college years? I have always wanted to play the guitar, as I believe in future years it will work well to charm the ladies :P Also, if you play or have any friends that play the guitar, how long did it take for you to pretty much become somewhat advanced in it? LMK :)

  • Answer:

I teach guitar to a wide range of students aged from 6 to over 60 and the truth is it all depends on how much effort you put into your practice. I have a 50 year old student who learns faster than one of my 20 year old students because he practices harder and more regularly compared to the 20 year old. But in general I find that most teens who come to me to learn guitar do learn quite fast because they have plenty of time to practice. It all depends on your dedication to practice. If you want to learn guitar you're better off to start learning now rather than wait for your college years when you think you might learn faster. Just because you might learn faster in 5 years time doesn't mean you will be a better player. If you start now you will have 5 years of experience by the time you reach college so you're still better off starting to learn now. It's pretty hard to answer how long it takes to become an advanced player because it means different things to different people. I started learning guitar when I was 10 and felt pretty advanced by the time I was 15. But I'm 24 now and my technical ability has improved much over the last 9 years. I'm sure in another 10 years I'll be a lot better because I continue to practice regularly. If you practice regularly (I recommend short practice sessions every day under 30 minutes), you could become quite advanced within a few years. Another thing to keep in mind is you will start to really enjoy playing guitar only after a few months of practice. You don't need to be technically advanced to enjoy playing. So if you want to play guitar, start learning now. Good luck

It all depends on your natural ability, it took me about 2 years to become confident, it might take you more or less. I would say start as soon as you can, and invest in some good lessons to keep any bad habits from forming.

hahaha! my friend it DOES charm the ladies let me tell you that! thats a plus to making making haha people are right its about how much you practice. if you do an hour a day with out fail you will progress very quickly. i played guitar on and off for 2 years and i was pretty good but it wasn't until i dedicated so much time a day and now I'm grade 8, teaching, in a band making a living! "Natural ability" has nothing to do with it i personally believe it doesn't exist ANYBODY can learn to do something if they try hard enough! Its taken me 5 years to get where i am. I've got all the qualifications i need i started at your age! Good luck :) and let us know how it goes!

depends on how much effort and time ur willing to put into it. U wont become advanced over night. U have to build calluses on ur fingers and learn ur basic chords first. And find some exercises (scales) to practice to help strengthen ur fingers. Just remember, it will take time. I'd say the younger the better and practice for at least 30 to 45 min every day.

I think if you're willing to do it now and passionate and have time now then learn now, don't wait things could change and it's better to be at some kind of standard now then build on your foundations later :) Good luck!
