  • Answer:

Closest thing nowadays to 80's heyday is 80's bands (Iron Maiden and Megadeth's still rockin' it). I'd advise Machine Head. They've gotten so amazing ever since they revived the band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhkQEWKeqTE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4U0Xo9ohdFk Fozzy's also pretty good band to get into when starting....don't be dissuaded by the fact Chris Jericho's the main singer...they're actually pretty good. Now, if you're into experimenting even a little, metel's got a whole bucketload of music. To me, there's a lot more music experimentation in Metal than anything the Indie crowd's got going. Start with Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, and Opeth. These are the Big 3 Progressive bands. They're amazing bands that have put some of the best albums ever made. Period. Just youtube some songs to get a feel, but I'd recommend getting any of their albums and listening to it as a whole as opposed to separate tracks. (You HAVE to get Images and Words first, though.) One word of caution: Because they're prog bands, each album sounds different from the last. Especially Opeth. Their last album's very mellow. If you want their harder stuff, check out Blackwater Park, Still Water, and My Arms, Your Hearse). If you're into the more agressive type of music, try Lamb of God (first 3 albums), Mastodon, Children of Bodom (everything after Hate Crew Deathroll was complete rubbish), Iced Earth, Amon Amarth (Viking metal!), Meshuggah (yes, they are a little meshuggah), and Arch Enemy. Try Isis for sludge. If you want ethnic, try Orphaned Land - Mabool. Its Metal-meets Middle Eastern/Yeminite music. Pretty cool Bible story, too. If you want doom, try Darkest Days first. Its a big genre, but for obvious reasons, its not very popular (its doom for a reason...). For power metal, try Epica or Kamelot (the whole genre's pretty interchangeable...you'll see what I mean when you listen to some songs). For opera metal (yes, opera metal!), try Therion first. For something completely different, try Unexpect...its either a love-it-or-hate it sort of thing. (They're Canadian....eh?) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbSUEbG3OVE I also would try Katatonia. They're really a unique band that became unique because the lead singer couldn't do growls. Its not hard, yet gut-wrenching stuff...hard to describe. Metal's HUGE, so if you'd like something, put the song on Pandora and find new bands through that medium, and check forums/metal review websites.
