Do you need an acting agent to get into plays outside of school?

  • I really want to be an actress and i was wondering if you need an acting agent to get into plays because i don't have one, and if you do need an agent, how do you get one?

    no,most all community theater is amateur open calls. you don't need an agent. if it's a professional play you will need a theatrical agent. you can find lists of agencies on SAG'S web site. you find agencies your close to,like in the same city that take people your age and that are looking for new clients. you send them what they ask for. if they want to see you, they will get back to you and set up an audition for you. you will need to audition in person. if you can't give a very good audition, you won't get an agent. if your a minor, a parent will have to get an agent for you. you can't get one yourself.

It depends. Plays at your local community theater? No. Broadway? Probably. If you haven't done anything except school plays, you won't be able to get an agent. I suggest what you do is create your resume. Look aroun online for help on how to do that. And lets take a look at your experience- if you've been in 7 or so plays, with at least a lead or two (preferably more) then you're probably ready for community theater. you're probably saying to yourself- WHOA THAT'S A LOT. In reality, no- its not. I'm in 8th grade and I've been in five school plays, two of which I was the lead. In the past two years. I've also acted in a small student short film, earned 5 awards, directed a one-act play, been in my school's Theater Production classes, and have been the vice-president and president of my school's drama club. If I can do that in two years, you can too. Now, if you've only played one-liner parts in two or three small plays put on by the normal theater group, then I don't think you're ready. Even with all that I have up there, I STILL don't think I'm ready for community theater. If you really want to be an actress, you'll be willing to wait :)
