Getting started with psychological therapy?

I have problems with anxiety, depression, mood swings, and a few things like that. i want to feel better, and many things have led me to believe that some kind of therapy is a good bet for this. However, i have no idea how to get started. I don't know how to find a therapist or how to start looking, or even what to look for. The internet says a lot of things like "talk to your regular doctor" or "talk to your family." well i don't have any of those things so those ideas are out. "talk to your insurance company" is not an option because my insurance is through my job and i never want my job to have any way of knowing that i am attending therapy (i work in a 'manly' field and any suggestion that you're not 100% perfect can be used as an excuse to screw you over). I don't know what to do other than this. The best idea i've come up with so far is just cold calling therapists in the area after finding their numbers on the internet. but how do i know these people are decent, or that they can offer anything for me specifically? and would they give me a recommendation to someone better? and can i trust them? Can you give me a better way to get this going?
