How can i get my ps3 to recognize my external drive?

its about 500 gb not sure i know the formatting for the ps3 is differnetn when i try to format the hard drive i only have 2 optionas ntfs or ex fat should i do exfat to get the drive to work withe the ps3 cause it dosent even show up
