My Dads Leg Is Sore... Please Help?!?!?!?
-
Last October, my dad fell and broke his leg. Some of his bones smashed so he had to get a plate and screws in his leg. Up to this day, his leg still hurts. To make him feel better, I rub his leg because I love working with body parts and he goes to Physiotherapy and I help him with his assigned exercises. But he still says it's really sore and I don't know what to do. I've tried moisturising cream because the skin around the scab (or scar if you wanted to call it) where they operated on his leg is dry. I really want to help him because my dad means everything to me and I want to help him with his pain. He says that he reckons that the plate and screws in his leg are rusted because of showering and stuff. Could that be a reason? Please help.

Answer:
No need to worry about rust or anything along those lines. I have a plate and 8 screws in my neck. I had my first neck surgery in 96, my second neck surgery in 99 and my final surgery in 2001. The fact that he is still in therapy may be a large reason for the pain. You don't describe the pain, but when you do therapy, it really hurts to get those muscle and tendons in good shape again. The normal thing I have been advised to do, is use ice packs right after therapy. Followed by moist heat. A great little tool that I suggest to everyone with bone surgery and therapy is as follows: 1) two long sports type white socks (clean) 2) 5# bag of Regular White RIce (NOT instant) 3) Divide rice between the socks to the thickness that you think will be comfortable when placed on the injury 4) Tie a knot in the opening of the sock. (to keep rice inside) 5) NOW U have to rice packs, Keep one in Freezer (for cold pack) Use on in MicroWave(moist heat) 6) DO NOT GET PACKS WET~ ALWAYS KEEP SOCK PACKS DRY 7) To HEAT Rice Pack, place on paper towel in microwave and heat for approx 2 Min. Be careful not to burn sock/rice. The RicePack should be very warm when held, BUT no Hot enough to burn U 8) Use Hot RicePack after you massage area lightly-use some type of light rubbing oil. (I love almond oil). 9) Massage Oil in COMPLETELY until muscles relax. 10) Now keep Hot pack on as long as you like, You may have to reheat ever 20-30min Also dad might try taking some type of tylenol, or anti inflammatory tablet. If that does not help with pain he may have to talk to Doctor about muscle relaxers or pain medication.

No. That can't be the reason. When medical procedures such as that happen, they use special metals that DO NOT RUST. I suggest he goes to the doctors.

First of all, the plate and screws can't be rusted, they're made to be in the human body and do not rust. This could be the tissues in his leg still healing or be because there is damage to the nerves. Ask your dad to speak to his doctor, so that he can get something for the pain. There are several possible treatments, depending on what the problem is. I really hope that your Dad will get an reduction in his pain.

First off, no, the metal in the plates and screws is a special metal that cannot rust. Most of the time these plates and screws will stay in place forever, but sometimes they cause discomfort and need to be removed. This is a question for his orthopedic doctor. Also he needs to check with this doctor to find out if the amount of pain that he is experiencing is normal. Sometimes these wounds can get infected and this can cause pain. Recovery from a bad fracture depends on age, health, where the fracture is, the severity of the fracture, the amount of time the leg was immobilized, the amount of pain that your Dad can comfortably tolerate to cooperate with his physical therapy, etc. When massaging his leg, do not massage the back of the calf, which can lead to blood clot formation, otherwise, massage is a great idea. Lotion over the incision will keep the scar flexible. Elevating the leg will help. Medications like ibuprofen (over the counter anti inflammatory medication) can be helpful. Encourage your Dad to fully cooperate with the physical therapist and be supportive. You can also ask the physical therapist how much pain is expected.
