Can i use the Stafford Loan to study abroad in Germany?

  • I'll be 19 when I go. I want to take a Gap year with YFU and go to Germany live with a host family and attend the local high school. Can I use the Stafford loan for this? Or I talked to a YFU counselor and they said they could set me up with some college classes, could I use the stafford loan for that? But if I did the college classes could the loan cover the YFU tuition or could it just be applied to the classes? Before then I would have has two years of college

    You can only use US financial aid if you are enrolled as a full or part time, degree seeking student at a US university. You can then use your financial aid to go abroad as part of a formal international exchange, which is part of your US degree program. So no, you can't use financial aid, such as the Stafford, to just take a few college classes abroad, nor can you use it for a high school.
