Do I need special speakers for a turn-table?

Need help with speakers for a turntable?

  • I just bought a turntable and need help with where to go for the speaker set up. The audio cords are the red and white kind you see with most electronics but all the speakers I have just have the 3.5mm jacks. Any help is much appreciated.

  • Answer:

These sound like computer speakers, are they powered or passive ? If they require to be plugged into the AC this would mean they are powered, if not they are passive. If they are passive they really only work by running them on the outputs of your computer or you would need a small amplifier to power them like that from a headphone amplifier. Second you have to run the turntable into a phono-preamplifier, as this amplifies the low level signal from the phono cartridge, and then re-equalizes the signal back to a flat frequency responce. All records are recorded with bass frequency's reduced and high frequency's boosted so they can both get more music on a record, and so the phonocartrdige can track the program material recorded on the record. This in turn would go into your powered speakers or amplifier for the passive speakers. Kevin 40 years high end audio video specialist
