How do you stop swelling in your thumb?

Soft Tissue Swelling of Thumb?

  • X ray report says soft tissue swelling seen. Dr. showed me a white cloudy thing near PIP joint of thumb and said that he doubt the soft bone is dislocated, its not at its place, x ray is unusual. Blood reports show deficiency of 25 hydroxy vitamin D. He gave me medicines like Zinacef, NSAIDs and 4 Vitamin D injections and a lot of multi vitamin tablets. And told that it is infection. Symptoms are: - Thumb PIP joint swelled - Swollen area is discolored, it is darker in color like black - One swollen corner is hard - Inflammation - Itching - Pain inside as as well as thumb cannot be touched because of pain - Unable to do any forceful activities with thumb - Thumb nail is getting horizontally wavy. - If I hold any hard thing, the thumb is pressed from there till long and takes time to come back to original shape. I have no bone problem at all, nothing, I am totally fit otherwise, thats why it is not arthritis, dr. has confirmed. This all developed itself, I had no injury nothing at all. Suddenly I felt a little discomfort inside thumb PIP joint then it started swelling around a month ago. Do you think it could be soft tissue sarcoma, could it be cancerous? Or what it could be? Please freely share your views. I am 31 female.

  • Answer:

X-rays are done to see if there is bone damage, not to see tissue damage. All tissue shows up as a shadow on an x-ray. I would recommend following your doctors direction for a few days. If there is no improvement, I would go back to your doctor and ask him to do a CT scan or MRI of you thumb. With either of these, he will be able to see the tissue of you thumb much more clearly thus being able to diagnose you more completely. Hope this helps! Best wishes!

It think all April is saying is that the symptoms look like the problem is caused by an infection. Also, a white cloudy thing could be a granuloma, which is a hardened capsule that forms around a foreign object like a splinter or thorn that gets embedded deeply under the skin. A granuloma would feel like a hard, round object. A vitamin D deficiency alone would not cause the discoloration so an infection seems like a possibility. Problems that can be caused by vitamin D deficiency are very similar to symptoms caused by infection, and a person could have both problems at the same time. It looks like the doc decided to treat your for potential infection and for vitamin D deficiency. You may have more than one problem going on. If all these symptoms were present when the doc examined you give this a few more days to see what happens. If any of the symptoms are new since the doc saw you or if things don't show signs of improvement in a few more days, its time to go back to the doc.

Discolor and pain=infection, plain and simple. Doesn't mean you smashed it. It could have started off as something minor, a splinter you didn't realize you had or anything else in the world.

I think your dr. is wrong on what he said in a couple of places which would make any of the solutions also wrong. Dr.'s say there is an inflammation of the area, which to me means there is an infection of some kind but there isn't. The muscles tend to tighten up which is a fact the dr.'s don't recognize properly. When a muscle tightens up it's going to restrict the blood flow through it so the blood backs up to cause the swelling in the area. Tight muscles are also going to be painful and make it hard to move the joint. Here's how you can free up tight muscles in your thumb to release the pain you are having: Bend your thumb as close to closed as you can get but can still open a bit. Wrap your other hand around the back side of your hand so you can position that thumb on the web between the thumb and finger and press it into the lower joint just above the knuckle and press in firm and hold. Now relax your body by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed. After 30 seconds slowly open your thumb up as far as you can, then release the pressure on the muscle but continue holding it open for another 30 seconds. Go back to the starting position but this time move your thumb up to just above the upper joint and press in and hold. Do the relax again as well as slowly opening, releasing the pressure and holding it. Once done you should have the relief you are looking for.
