What can you do with a degree in visual art?

What art degree or art related degree is good?

  • A friend of mine loves art and wants to get her degree in it. I'm worried she may not be able to find a job afterwards and have asked her to find a career path that allows her to explore her artistic side, but that also allows for a steady paycheck. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Art therapy or art administration would be good art degrees. Also art education or graphic design are some good considerations as well. Those degrees will open some job opportunities up, unlike degrees such as ceramics, illustration, or painting. If she isn't interested in therapy, administation, education, or design, then maybe she could major in fine arts, which would allow her to become an archivist, or a curator at an art museum or something. Almost every career field is a gamble, but it's truly best to do something that you love. She can try illustration of she really loves drawing. Animation and graphic design are always going to be in demand fields as well, more so if she's worried about getting a serious job. Tell her to stray away from a fine art major because it isn't really flexible and isn't can only prepare you for freelance work. So if she wants a steady paycheck, then definitely animation or graphic design.
