What's the difference between a chroma key and a digital chroma key?

Whats the difference between a 3 valve baritone horn (key of c) and a 4 valve euphonium (key of b flat)?

  • I currently play on a three valve King 628 baritone horn. I think it is in the key of c (correct me if I'm wrong, my tuning note is a b flat) and i would like to buy a four valve king 2280 euphonium(which is in the key of b flat i believe) what would be the differences between playing them. for example: would fingerings be different? tuning note? what does the fourth valve do? and can i still play as high (i can play up to a high g currently) thanks

  • Answer:

First of all a baritone has a brighter sound than a euphonium, which is due to its larger bell. Also, it is easier to hit higher notes on baritone than euphonium. You are correct that the baritone in the key of C and your tuning note is Bb. A Bb baritone/euphonium is usually for trumpet players because the trumpet is in Bb. The music written is in treble clef (keep in mind its for trumpet) as opposed to bass clef. Fingerings of a Bb baritone are totally different from a C baritone and is the same as trumpet fingerings. The tuning note would be a G. The fourth valve is for lower notes, lower than a three valve baritone. If you can play a high G on the baritone(i assume above middle C), I don't think you could play it anymore. A high F above middle C at most. I played Stars and Stripes Forever on euphonium and its way harder to hit high As as opposed to baritone.
