How much it costs to have a soft top fitted?

Could gators that have been fitted to my car less than 24hrs ago be responsible for my drive shaft breaking?

  • I drive a 9yr old Fiat Punto, and my car failed its MOT on the front gators which were perished and leaking grease. I had no knocking noise at that stage, and the mechanic said it was caught early. I booked the car in 6 days later, and both gators were fitted and new MOT certificate issued. Today less than 24 hrs after they were fitted, i pulled off my driveway, and my shaft has broken 10yds from my house. AA say its too much of a coincidence that its broken less than 24hrs after garage has fiddled with it. Opinions please, and relative costs to get fixed if garage refuse to accept liability. Thanks

  • Answer:

the gators are only the rubber covers to stop crap gettin in , wont do any damage , sounds like AA is right , , for the garage to fit gators they have to dismantle and rebuild , they should have noticed if there was a problem , go to vosa, they govern garages reff m,o,ts , call them

Sounds like the cv joint has come off the driveshaft, its held in by a spring clip on the end of the shaft, could well of not been there when they put the shaft back into the cv when replacing the boot, meaning when turning the steering on full lock the shaft will pull out of the cv, get another garage to check its there and to find out if this is the case, good luck

I think most unlikely that replacement CV boots could cause this sort of failure. I`ve fitted dozens in my time, its a standard procedure and should not involve stressing the driveshaft. Typical price per side about £35

Define gator. In the US we have Small Claims courts where citizens can file suits w/ minimal costs such as filing fees which vary from state to state, etc. I'v filed a few, won them all & collected my Judgements. Hopefully, you have something similar in UK where you wouldnt have yet more costs accruing to you. As for the damage, for all you know, the incompetent, unethical mechanics took your car for a joyride...check the mileage.

I think the best outcome will be if you buy new CV joints and the garage fit them at no labour cost. They were at best negligent in not telling you how bad the joints were when they fitted the gaiters, at worst they might possibly have caused the damage, although this is unlikely.

I think trying to PROVE anything one way or another would be impossible. It's just tough luck.

I would hire a barrister and sue them.
