How long does an alto saxophone mouthpiece last?

Looking good mouthpiece and reed for alto saxophone.?

  • Recently I have purchased Chinese alto saxophone of Diplomat company which cost me 380 USD. but mouthpiece is not so good. I am looking for used or new mouthpiece. can you suggest some name and price of it. and I am also looking for carbon fiber reed but I don't know about this product. What is life of carbon fiber reed.

  • Answer:

Get someone who plays to check your horn out. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's unplayable. If it is a good sax, get yamaha 4C for the mouthpiece. You don't want a carbon fiber reed yet, the ones I know of are extremely bright and hard to control

I'd say get a Yamaha 4C mouthpiece first, they are decent. The other guy made a good point, first check your instrument. I wouldn't expect too much from a $380 sax. There's no point to spend 200 bucks on a mouthpiece while you instrument is bad. As for reeds, I've never tried carbon fibre reeds, they are quite expensive. Some people just swear by cane reeds since they give you a better sound. To start on, I'd recommend normal Vandoren (blue box) reeds with strength of 2.
