Emperor Scorpions as pets?

Adding some Vita-Sand to emperor scorpion substrate?

  • Its been about a week since i set up my emperor scorpion tank and i made my own mix for the substrate, just wanted to see if it was ok. Not sure of the weights of the bags so s/m/l is what i will use haha 1 Large bag of eco-earth jungle bed 1 small bag of coconut husks 1 medium bag of vita-sand basically my reasoning for adding the vita sand is that it is calcium carbonate which is good for reptiles and other pets of that sort and since you are supposed to dust the scorpions crickets with calcium/vitamin powder the vita sand would be a good addition too. so any feedback? thanks!

  • Answer:

Actually, there is lots of controversy as to whether calcium is good or bad for scorpions, so it's best to just be cautious and not use it. Sand will cause the substrate to not hold moisture as well, and it will most likely dry out faster as well. You don't have to dust crickets for scorpions and such, mainly what people do (including myself) is they make sure the crickets are fed a mix of foods (Organic veggies, fruits, etc.) and kept hydrated (Using expandable water gel). Honestly, I also think the sand would possibly be an irritant to the emperor as they are a burrowing species, and sand isn't encountered in their natural habitat, so the sand getting in their joints and between their tergite plates (The plates on their back) may be an irritant to them.
