If there is an existing product can you patent something similar?

OK, so there is something i was thinking about inventing but i did some searching and found a similar product that serves the same purpose. I have heard that if you can better the product or make something similar you could still patent your idea. So i would like to know from someone who has some experience and or knowledge on patents and the legal aspects of patents.

You can patent it if your product works differently but achieves the same goal; it's the mechanism you're patenting, not the purpose.
