How long does a food allergic reaction last?

How do I know if it was an allergic reaction or food poisoning?

  • I recently woke up in the middle of the night with severe abdominal cramps. Upon entering my bathroom I noticed one of my eyes was swollen completely shut. I then started itching unbearably on my hands and feet. Shortly after that, I developed a rash on my back and stomach which itched, but not as bad as my hands and feet which were, by that time, bright red. I then became violently ill for about 30 minutes, took a benadryl, went to sleep and woke up and was fine, except it took about 2 days for my eye to return to normal. I had eaten mussels for dinner, which I have eaten numerous times before but now I'm wondering if I just got a "bad" mussel and it was food poisoning or if it was an allergic reaction. Anyone know how to tell....other than trying one again.
