Can i use my sim card with an iphone 3g?

Can I buy a sim card and use it with my unlocked iPhone 3G in NYC?

I'm going to be in NY next week for one week. I have an unlocked iPhone 3G currently using in South America. When I travel to Europe I normally just buy a sim card and get the local number and use it during my trip. I'm wondering if I can do the same in the US (or in NYC). Any ideas? Suggestions? Thanks!
