Tanning Mom in the news: Why isn't the Tanning Bed Facility ALSO held legally responsible?

  • I know nothing of tanning bed culture, but according to one celeb, "Everyone knows you're not supposed to take kids [into tanning beds]." This makes me think of a person trying to get a kid into a bar to drink, or into a casino where kids aren't allowed. Those places would be in hot water if they allowed a child inside. How did this Tanning Mom get a kid inside the facility if you're not supposed to have kids in there? The mom looks awful, by the way. She clearly has a deadly degree of addiction to the tanning beds. How can she not know or see how bizarre she looks with her overly dark skin and light eyes, hair, and light rims of the lower eyelids. If her rims were darker it wouldn't took so weird. But since they are so light it makes it obvious that this deep color is not a natural match for her. Isn't part of the responsibility with the tanning business for letting a little kid into a tanning bed? Wouldn't they know what's going on in their facility? It's clear to me that when the mom did this she probably thought no more of it than putting a ponytail and lip gloss on her kid. I wonder if her 20 sessions a week can affect brain function...like baking her brain cells, and I mean that in a serious way, not sarcastically! People get baked-brain heat stroke in the sun, couldn't something LIKE that happen with overuse of tanning beds? And now I'm being sarcastic: When the woman drives herself home, wouldn't it be like Driving Under the Influence of a Tanning Bed, or DUITB? Her mind has GOT to be altered! Jokes aside, this woman really needs help.

  • Answer:

The mother claims the child accompanied her to the tanning salon much the way one would accompany someone to the dentist's office. The daughter waited while the mom went to tan. It is not plausible the daughter was on the tanning bed with the mother - for one thing, the "beds" aren't that wide, and for another, the only way the 2 of them would have fit on the bed would have resulted in an uneven tanning for the mother which would have clearly been unacceptable for her. I don't think you are exposed to any significant UV light just being next to a tanning bed while it's in use, so I doubt the daughter got sunburned from this. Now, whether or not the salon let the daughter use a separate bed is unknown. If they did, then yes they should face punishment. However as others have pointed out, the daughter has red hair and is very fair skinned, meaning she's going to burn very very very easily. So just walking around outside on a relatively sunny day for a few minutes could have been enough to turn the girl pink. (Mom of course wouldn't notice even if you exposed her to the full power of the sun without the protection of our atmosphere...)

First, young children learn by example. So, is the child already somewhat damaged? Second, how much shorter will the Mom's life be due to skin cancer? This child may not have a mom later in her teen or adolescent years.

The investigation into the case is still on-going, so it would be wrong to draw conclusions. However on the basis of a child in a tanning salon, it is illegal for a child under the age of 14 to enter a tanning booth, let alone use a UVA tanning bed, in New Jersey in which the case happened. However a child may be left in a waiting area. Assuming the child went unseen, was not made to be present to the staff, or was fraudulently snuck past by the mother, then the tanning salon is not responsible. If they where aware of the child presence then they are open to be sued for both negligence and and malpractice.

Shabbat Shalom!

Mums shouldn't tan children. A word of correction yes, No physical harming of children please. Come here chile, I'se gonna tan yo hide.

She will get the help she needs in jail,no doubt about that. She will refresh her brain about the consequences & at the same time she will lighten up herself from looking like a monkey. The business too will get the appropriate punishment they deserve.Children shouldn't be encourage to do that. They shouldn't even consider to tan themselves at this age when they got other priorities like school to think about. Not modelling or worse...
