Are my Lab Results Concerning and What Could Cause My Symptoms? What Should I do Next?
-
Labs on 12/30/2009 TSH---2.290 Thyroxine (T4)---5.6 5/2/2012 TSH---1.89 Thyroxine (T4)---5.3 The below symptoms I have experienced for over the last decade with no relief by psychological interventions. I have also taking synthroid (Levothyroxine), whic didn't seem to help. Primary Symptoms: Depression, Anxiety, Irritability, Headcahes, Fatigue, Confusion (At times I walk around aimlessly and forget what I am doing and where I am.) Secondary Symptoms: Body Aches, Hair Loss, Acne What could cause these symptoms? Reminder: I have already been cleared psychologically, so this is not a mental disorder. Please be as helpful and detailed as possible. I really need the help of others that have waged a similiar fight to mine.

Answer:
ALL these symptoms are TYPICAL thyroid ones including the MENTAL ones. "I have also taking synthroid (Levothyroxine), whic didn't seem to help" Does this mean that you stopped?!? These meds take a good while to give you the desired results ... I am talking MONTHS. And then the meds are for life. Apparently whatever doctor diagnosed HypOthyroidism (thus put you on the Levo) did not tell you ANYTHING! You need a new doctor NOW!!! Oftentimes we still have to be on antidepressant/antianxiety meds UNTIL the thyroid is corrected ... THEN we TAPER OFF the AD/AA meds & only UNDER DOCTOR SUPERVISION. Here is info you need: You need your thyroid re-tested. You need testing for thyroid ANTIBODIES as well as TSH. TSH ‘norm’ should be .3 – 3 (w/ most feeling best at < 2) but, for diagnosis, may not mean much if ANTIBODIES are present which is indicative of Hashimoto’s Autoimmune Thyroiditis (cycles between HYPER & HYPO at start)…it is the main cause of eventual HypOthyroidism but worse (...OR Graves Disease – HypERthyroid from beginning). You will have to INSIST they test for the antibodies. They can code so that ins will pay. WARNING: Doctors seem not to want to find/treat thyroid disease. You may have to go to more than one doctor before you get the right tests, interpretation, and treatment. Best wishes.
