this has been bothering me for years. why do the tops of cornbread muffins get sticky when stored? and how to prevent it. tried to google and didn't come up with anything,.

Exactly how are you storing them? You must wait until the muffins are completely cool before putting them in a sealed container. Let them sit on the table for a couple of hours first. Until they are completely cold they are still giving off moisture and it will collect on the outsides if you contain it too soon.

maybe you are using too much sugar in the batter? but then again, I like my cornbread muffins totally fresh, so make them or cornbread sticks or blocks each time I want some. will be making cornbread sticks again soon, but they go away almost as fast as I can pull them out of the oven!

What is your recipe? Try using shortening instead of butter or maybe you are using too much sugar in the batter? Then again, I like my cornbread totally fresh. Without knowing your recipe it's almost impossible to answer.
