Would a 'W' on a transcript affect getting an internship/job with CIA?

W's on transcript, bad??! (intent to transfer to a 4 year University)?

  • Receiving a few "W" 's on your transcript, is it bad?!? So i plan on transferring out of community college to a Univeristy fall 2013. this is my 4th semester (Spring 2012) in my community college. my 1st 3 semesters i did pretty well. many A's, a B or two, and a few C's. However, this seamster (spring 2012) i have been having problems with depressions and anxiety issues, and as a result i was sent to a mental hospital for a week and a half. prior to going to the hospital i didn't have the correct mindset thus i was not doing well in my classes. after missing classes (lectures and test) i dropped 3 classes out of 4. because there was no way i was going to dig out of those holes. i will be receiving W's for those 3 classes. ok, now i have one class. however, i am doing so horrible in it. i thought i would be able to catch up but its proving to be a difficult task. i have never received a "D" or "F" as a final grade and i am worried. the last day to drop with a "W" is this sunday (May 6, 2012). Should i stick with the class and possibly get an "F" or "D". or should i get yet another "W"? I AM REALLY WORRIED ABOUT THE W'S! would a semester full of W's (4 classes) affect me much in getting into my university of choice? :( i still have 2 semesters left before i transfer and i plan on doing my absolute best (shooting for all A's). do i still have a chance? can i express in my application to universities about what had happened to me (mental hospital/depression) as a reason as to why i withdrew from my classes? i don't want to sound whiny and like I'm making excuses though... can i get anyones advice please? thanks!

  • Answer:

Don't make more out of this than you have to. First of all, take the W. It is the lesser of two evils over an F. Next, you don't have to nor are you expected to give a detailed account of your Ws. Say something like "personal difficulties, which are now resolved, prevented me from devoting satisfactory attention to my studies and I therefore chose to Withdraw from several courses." That's it. Good luck.

W's are not bad. The fact that you had them all at the same time is coincidental and can be explained in a letter easier. It is much better to receive a W than an F or D.
