No, u cannot it should be strictly "x" for cross and "." for dot product, these symbols have significance and not like any other formula

No. (u.w)v means multiply the vector v by the scalar value (u.w)... this can also be written as (u,w) by the way. You can't take a cross product of a scalar value and a vector, so it's just simple multiplication once you figure out the dot product inside the parenthesis.
