What exactly do you do in PR?

What's PR like as a job?

  • I'm quite interested about going into PR as a job. What do I have to study at sixth form/uni, and does anyone have any tips that they can share with me? Thanks a bunch xx

  • Answer:

PR has changed a lot over the last 20 years. Back then, all you needed was a typewriter, a rolodex and a fax machine. You still need the same writing skills you did back then, but there are two things I've noticed about the best PR pros I know: 1. They are EXTREMELY web savvy. They distribute press releases over the web, and they understand how that's a very important for SEO. They use social media to create awareness and community. They understand that thanks to sites like Digg, the rules have changed: mainstream media doesn't have the same lock on the news that they used to. 2. They are amazing networkers, and they bend over backwards to cultivate really good relationships with reports, editors, writers, etc. with local, state and national media. They understand when to blast something out to the world via the web, and when to call a specific person with an "exclusive."
