How can I become a Pediatric nurse?

Can you become a pediatric nurse with an associates is nursing(ADN)?

  • I'm 21 and just had a baby. I've been a stat at home mom because my husband takes care of us but I know it's time for me to go back to school and help out the family. I need to get through as soon as possible. I love that I will only have to work a few days a week. I love children. And I know I'd be a wonderful pediactric nurse. My ultimate goal is to be a pediatric nurse and I know I may have to work and gain experience to achieve my goal but I know I can get there. Is that an attainable goal with only an ADN and not a BSN?

  • Answer:

I have been a pediatric nurse for 6 years since i was 22. I do have my BSN but i have worked with many nurses that have their ADN at my hospital. Yes you work 3 12 hour shifts but you also have to work weekends and holidays and stay past your 12 hours sometimes (if you work in a hospital). Pediatrics is great but its very very hard and stressful sometimes. However, many hospitals are going Magnet and are starting to just hire BSNs. The job market is not great right now and having you BSN may or may not help you and a job. Its competitive. So that is something to watch out for when you graduate. If it is possible for you, look for BSN programs. They have some that take less than 2 years. Good luck.

I admire your love of children and your desire to work with and take care of them. The short answer is NO you can't. Not all is lost you will need your BSN and further training in neonatal and pediatric specialties to be considered. Even then it can take awhile you'll need experience as an RN which as mentioned does require a BSN degree. If you already have your ADN degree then your well on your way and you should check with your schools advisers about what courses you may need to fulfill your degree. If your just starting out and need help deciding what school to attend check http://medicalschoolcareers.com its a good source of information on Health Care Careers. Best of Luck

Hi! I'm doing my prerequisites now, so I can get into the nursing program, so I don't really have first hand knowledge about this, but I have done a TON of research, and talked to about a million counselors. LOL. So this is what I found out. Getting a job as a pediatric nurse is really hard. CUz come on, everyone wants to work with babies. lol. But this is what my counselors and research told me to do. (I also want to be a pediatric nurse) You need your RN. Whether it's getting your AND or BSN. However, my counselor said that most hospital don't hire ADN's anymore unless they commit to going back to school while working at their hospital. (The hospital most of the time pays for atleast some of that.) So say you get a job at a hospital, your most likely not going to get a job as a pediatric nurse right away. Your going to have to earn it. For example, you start out in critical care or trauma, then when a spot at that hospital for pediatrics opens up, then you could apply for it and most likely get the job cuz you already work there. Sorry if that didn't make complete sense. LOL. Anyway, I hope you get the gist of what I'm trying to say. Goodluck in your career!
