  • I'm at a community thinking about transferring to a four year college for computer information technology cyber security . I could stay were I'm at and get an associates degree in computer information technology cyber security but I'm afraid I wont get a job paying at least 23 -22 dollars an hour or even a job at all lol

  • Answer:

As far as what you need to get an IT job: The Holy Grail for IT employment is a 4 year computer related degree, some industry certs and experience. If you have all three of those you should be good. If you have only one element that will help but you may be competing with other people who have two elements or perhaps all three. There are people who are answerers here that post that you don't need a college degree or that an Associates is all you need but I have found that if you don't have the 4 year degree it makes things a lot harder and you would need a ton of luck to find work. So the ideal thing is to have a 4 year degree. However, if you are already in a community college and on your way to get an Associates degree you should finish that out and get the Associates first. After you finish the Associates out you can transfer your credits into the 4 year school and finish out year 3&4 there to get the Bachelors degree. Generally a local community college is cheaper than the 4 year school so this will save you some money. The reason why I recommend this is that you could have a life event, illness or circumstance come up if you transferred immediately into the 4 year school and end up with no degree at all. This way you would at least have the Associates. A Security emphasis in your studies is a wise choice. Start working towards the Security+, CISSP and CEH certifications. I have over 20 Microsoft and CompTIA certifications and just got the Security+ a few days ago. It sounds like you are taking all the good steps and I think that you will be successful. Work in a beginner position will be $35,000 per year with this doubling and tripling after a few years of experience. Best wishes!
