How is it working as a correctional officer?

How does a Corrections Officer get to working specifically with receiving and releasing?

  • My friend has been wanting to join and be a Corrections Officer for quite some time. And he said he would want to do the receiving and releasing. I figured a new officer would be placed wherever they tell you to go, but could he work up to that being his main job?

  • Answer:

He will be trained in all aspects of the job and then once off probation can ask for a specific assignment. Booking and releases can be tricky especially if you do not check ID etc and release the wrong person, say a major felon when a release was for a misdemeanor. Inmates are slick and will try to get out what ever the costs.

He's dreaming. It takes years to get the job you want. If he's motivated and toughs it out he can go very far in that field, because very few people last more than two years in correctional facilities. Best of luck to your friend!
