How can I make instrumetnal heard in my video?

How can you make your own composite/RCA video extension cable?

  • I am trying to buy an extension cord for RCA/composite video (female to male). I heard that you need a 75ohm resistance for video, but other than that it is just copper wire. Is there a way I can make this with speaker wire and composite heads from radioshack?

  • Answer:

While it is true that, ideally, 75-ohm cable should be used for video signals, an awful lot of cheap A/V cables are simply two or three ordinary "shielded" audio cables that have no specified characteristic impedance. They work well enough for composite video that (for short runs, anyway) very little, if any, improvement can be derived from using 75-ohm cable. >> Most such A/V cables don't deserve to be called "shielded" because the outer conductor is merely wrapped around the insulation of the inner conductor, and doesn't really act as a screen. Extension cables can be purchased at reasonable prices, so there is little reason to make your own, but if you want to do it, you'll need some audio cable, plugs, and jacks. Soldering is required, so..... >> If you want to use 75-ohm cable for the video, buy some RG59 or RG6. Speaker wire is altogether different in construction, and is not suitable for this use. Radio Shack may be convenient, but its selection of merchandise is very limited, and most of its employees have no idea how to do anything other than sell phones. Look for a real electronic parts store somewhere within reach of where you live. Hint: Radio amateurs usually know where such places can be found.

Speaker wire, no. I wouldn't use that for line audio even. For video, you can use any 75 ohm RF coax, such as RG59 or RG6. You can use F connectors with RCA adapters, or RCA connectors directly. For audio, you can use the same coax you use for video, or Cat3 or better twisted pair cable. For shorter extensions, I just use male to male cable sets with RCA couplers.
