Athlon 64 X2 5000+ heat and clock issues?

• Asking for my aunt as she is having problems and isnt tech savvy. Her computer is a prebuilt HP slimline somethingorother with a Athlon 64 X2 5000+ cpu. At first her problems were the processor overheating to the point of the failsafe kicking in and cutting power. I cleaned the fan and heatsync out and properly applied some arctic silver, assuming together it would be a huge help. well, it helped a little, for a short time. Now once again the temps are unreasonable, but at least its not getting so hot the failsafe kicks in. I checked it out in CoreTemp and it idles at about 60c. I also noticed some other oddities. The voltage said 1.1 iirc, and the clock jumped from .999 to 2.6 every now and then. if its dropping to 1ghz i dont see how it can be getting so hot. a simple facebook game is enough load to bring the temps to a max. in fact thats what use to raise the temps over the failsafe range, ONE Chrome window open with ONE tab with something like Farmville running in said tab. i googled the issue but couldnt find anything fitting. the computer also runs excruciatingly slow, and has for at least a year, whereas brand new she said it zipped along no problem. is this a known issue for that processor? any simple solutions that dont involve buying new hardware? i thought she needed a new computer, assuming she had a POS cheapo processor, till i looked it up and found out it was actually pretty alright when it was new and even today is more than adequate for internet browsing and flash-based browser games

  I would replace the heatsink/fan with an after market one. Those Athlon 64 X2 processors can run fairly hot.
