Please explain basic principles of how a computer works?

• I did this at college 2 years ago, but would like to start researching about computers again as a hobby. Please can anyone explain how computers work, how do OS's work with the computer? And all about binary ect. and how software works with the processor etc. also things like BIOS. any information is really appreciated and please talk as though your talking to someone yuonger as i havent done this sort of IT for a while, so am abit confused about the basic principles of how a computer works. thanks very much

  Where to start? A motherboard - a circuitry system on a piece of non conducting material. BIOS the software on a chip - basic input output system that controls the Boot process (the setup of your computer to allow everything to communicate) The CPU central processor unit (the chip) usually Intel or AMD - the heart of a computer to process data flows. The CPU facilitates the data to be processed. The BIOS chip turns on the basic devices like keyboard mouse and allows booting. Other devices like monitors, fans,hard drive etcetera are controlled by the software on the computer. It is the heart. The CPU is the brains. The CPU and BIOS contain info from the manufacturer that show on a monitor as logos etcetera. Once booted, a system can use the installed software which is processed as mentioned by the CPU. The BIOS at this time is semi redundant. OS's work by putting in place procedures for doing stuff. The software lets the brains know there is a scanner connected, a printer, a monitor etcetera. They are just lines of information instructions that get processed. eg IF this value in the CPU is zero THEN do this. IF this value in CPU is a one then do that. That is the basis of binary counting.
