How to make the transition from small town to big city?

Presently, I live in a small town with more or less 6000. When I finish school and get my degrees, I would love to move to a big city. You know all of the benefits: more people, new ideas and opportunities, and so many things to try/learn. While I have been to both Chicago and New York City before and loved the atmosphere of both, knowing full well what to expect, I am extremely apprehensive about the transition. What ways would make it easier? How can one prepare himself/herself for the big city? Any advice at all would be appreciated! The things I am most concerned about are: safety, jobs, and learning how to manage public transportation.

Do some investigative work. Check out neighborhoods that you could afford on websites that offer crime ratings and statistics. Check out job postings for the area (make sure you have a job lined up before you make your move). Use a search engine to ask questions like "why Chicago is a great place to live," or "why Chicago is a bad place to live." Do this for all of the cities that you are considering. It will make you feel better about moving if you don't jump into it blindly, and instead are making an informed decision.
