How do I clear my computer of all harmful viruses?

How do I remove these computer viruses?

  • Hi, my brother was on his friends' computer checking his email and got some pretty nasty viruses. I gave him a copy of "Malwarebytes" on a disc for him to install, but it wouldn't let him install it. Here's the symptoms that his computer has that we know of: -Malwarebytes won't install. -Changed file extension of Malwarebytes to .pif and a couple others that were suggested, as well as the file name of the software, to no avail. Still didn't install correctly and won't run. -constant bogus messages coming up informing that there's viruses, to buy bogus protection, and that his identity has been compromised. -Internet has been affected in the way that his browser shuts down after just a few minutes, and he also can't reconnect to his wireless internet ever since he disconnected intentionally. -Can't seem to be able to load into safe mode... he can't even get the menu items to come up. His computer just beeps at him. -Can't access "task manager", either. I have a clean laptop with internet that I'm using to try to help him with his computer. I can put any good free virus remover onto a disc and give it to him if it will help, but I don't know of any other than Malwarebytes. What type of virus could this be, and what would be the best way to get rid of it with the above mentioned handicaps, and without reinstalling windows? Is there anything else we could try? Thanks in advance. :)

  • Answer:

Shutdown. Reboot. Tap F8 like a maniac. Load "safe mode with networking" Change malwarebyte.exe name to something random. Try running it again, it should load now. Do a scan (quick scan is enough). Clean/delete everything that gets found (it might be alot, on slow computers it might seem like it froze, just click the clean button and don't touch it until its finished) Reboot. If problems still persist boot into safemode w/ networking again download rkill and combofix (might have to change names for both). Run rkill. Run combofix. Combofix will restart windows to finish cleaning the mess. After reboot you'll get errors when trying to launch anything , just reboot again (sometimes you'll have to do 2-3 times).

When the computer first boots, do ctrl+alt+delete and open the task manager, from there, go to processes, and look for any that are abnormal looking, normally they consist of about 10 random letters/digits. Right click said process and click end process tree. From there, you should be able to install the software and run the virus program immediately. You have to start the task manager as soon as the computer starts. Also, disconnect any sort of internet connection. This is the only way to do this. I have had this virus attack before on another computer in my household. Normally this comes from an insecure browser. Normally IE which has a hole that the viruses get through.

You need to use a LiveCD Anti Virus and boot this on the computer, that way it will not be in the Windows Operating system and can scan every files that is on the computer. But how you tackle this issue or problem is really your own choice and decision.

its just one of those ad viruses not very harmful just very annoying, quick solution is to boot in safe mode, and just delete/uninstall what ever is program is causing it, then just boot up in normal mode

boot your computer in safe mode..or another way is scan your computer with good antivirus ..norten or avast.etc.

boot in safe mode malwarebytes removes malware, not viruses in safe mode (i know you cant boot into that, but logging into debugging seems to fix this sometimes): install avast...the free version. run it and see if it corrects the problems. if that doesnt work, try deleting the profile (back up what you want to keep) and recreating it OR try combofix...its a heavy piece of software, so read the warnings before you run... heres a link but i would suggest doing your own research as well (this is not a virus removal too, but an aggressive malware removal, what you are discribing sounds like malware)

It sounds like a rogue infection. The messages claiming to have detected viruses, and urging you to buy the product to fix everything is classic rogue rubbish. If it IS a rogue, it would help to know the name. For now... Try this: Firstly, boot your computer to the Safe Mode menu screen. You do this by repeatedly pressing F8 as soon as you boot up. Once there, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking. Continue to boot from there, by pressing Enter. Start Internet Explorer, and when the program is open, click on the Tools menu and select Internet Options. Now click on the Connections tab. Now click on the Lan settings button. Where it says Use a proxy server for your Lan, remove the tick in the tick box, then press the OK button to close this screen. Now press the OK button to close the Internet Options screen. You should now have web access. Copy and paste this link into your browser’s address bar, and press Enter. It's a direct download for RKill. Save it to your desktop, then run it. When it's running, your desktop icons will vanish for a few seconds. When the notepad report is displayed, just close it. You may now delete RKill if you wish: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.exe RKill SHOULD HAVE STOPPED THE ROGUE FROM RUNNING, BUT IT WON'T HAVE REMOVED IT. Now open your browser and copy and paste this link into the address bar, and press Enter. It's a direct download for the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM). Install it, get updates and run a full scan (still in Safe Mode): http://www.myantispyware.com/mbam After this, try rebooting normally. If that's successful, I recommend you run another full scan with MBAM. It will detect malware that wasn't running in Safe Mode. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware can be easily uninstalled, should you wish to do so, but it may prove to be beneficial in the future. Hope this helps.
