How to get over my fear of a back tuck in cheerleading?

  • About a year ago I had my roundoff backhandspring tuck but then i broke my hand trying to do a back tuck standing (I had a spotter but they thought I was ready so they removed their hand) ever since then I've been afraid to do a back tuck standing, running or even with a spotter how do I get over this fear? Please help!

I have a funny answer before i give you the real answer... to get over your fear, you need to replace it with a greater fear... Like a coach literally throwing you into the tuck. Sounds funny, but I have seen it work. Now for the serious answer... You have to get out of your own way... get out of your head. Positive affirmations may help. Self-talk during the prep at first could also help. Try working it off the end of an air track or a Level 4 Vault Stack or a block or on a tumble track with a spotter. Get a heavy spot at first. Have the coach throw you into it if necessary. Build your confidence back up. I saw a gymnast that got mildly hurt doing her tuck develop a serious fear 3 weeks before championships. At practice, she would do a round-off back handspring and jump, but not throw it at all- just a rebound really. The coach caught her in one of the rebounds and flipped her over and placed her back on the floor. This happened 6 more times. The next time the coach warned her that she would be thrown again if she did that. She threw the tuck and landed it! Good Luck.
