Where can I modify my bike?

How can I modify a regular bike to handle a heavy man like me?

  • I can't afford an expensive bike made for someone of my weight (360 lbs) so I am hoping that someone knows how to get wider rims or tires or something so I don't simply crush the bike. It doesn't have to last longer than a summer because my weight is dropping steadily. Hooray! Thanks for any help!

You will need double wall rims... I'd recommend a mountain bike. You should be fine just riding, but I'd be afraid the rim may bend if you hit a small obstacle. A used mountain bike... referenced on bikepedia, should only run you a couple hundred. Check the specs. Keep your tires pumped up well to take care of those wheels and allow you to roll faster. Congrats on your weight loss!! Spam craigslist in your nearest city areas for Trek 4300, 4500, Giant Yukon, Rincon, Cannondale F7, F5, Specialized hardrock, rockhopper, Raleigh Talus 5.0, 8.0, GT avalanche, karakoram. Good luck. Mountain bike for sure... err toward a smaller size to allow for you to sit in a more upward position... the seatpost can be adjusted!

If you buy a cheap bike and then modify it, you will come close in cost to buying a strong enough bike in the first place. Any bike with significant modifications from its original equipment will no longer be covered by any manufacturer's warranty, so if there is a failure of any kind, they would simply say that you were not using the product as intended. Wider rims will not be a solution, wheels for extra weight need not only stronger rims, but more and better spokes along with stronger hubs. Just buying suitable wheels would cost several hundred dollars. Don't waste your money on a cheap bike, it won't last out the summer and you will have nothing to show for the money you spent. Even though your weight is dropping, you will still be a big guy and if you continue cycling you will need a sturdy bike. Buy it now

Go to the local bike shop and get a good bike. One that will only last the summer wont last a week. Most bikes are rated at 300 lbs. The shop can help you with something that will work. Hell at that weight walking will do a lot of good.

You definitely need to go to a bike shop because most bikes are only rated to 300 pounds.
