A great flower to grow is Statice. It looks like a wildflower/cottage garden flower. It is perennial (keeps growing from year to year) so you won't have to resow/replant. Its leaves grow fairly flat on the ground in a rosette, and its flower stems grow approx 30cm high with branched flower heads at top. Flowers almost year round, including cooler months. Comes in white, yellow, salmon, pink, purple. Best of all Statice flowers are everlasting; pick them and allow to dry, and you have indoor flowers for years (lasts 10+ years stored in cupboard, 2 years in vase on display). Statice is quite hardy and easy to grow.
Buy a package of wildflower seed and start with those. See what grows, and add perennials which come back year after year where you want them after the first wildflowers come up. One large bag will cover 1500 square feet.

Perennials are those flowers which reliably bloom year after year. They die back to the ground each winter after flourishing for a full growing season only to reemerge again in the spring. They're also noted for their texture and vibrant colors. Generally, perennials are a bit maintenance though there are those require almost no maintenance. These perennials are some the easiest to care for. They also provide colorful flowers and long lasting foliage. Daylilies are a very common perennial which do remarkably well with very little maintenance. Their flowers, which are available in a wide range of colors, bloom on stocks which grow up from clumps of long pointed foliage. A profuse bloomer, daylilies flower for weeks. They prefer a bit of shade in the afternoon when the sun is strongest. Easy Care Perennials - http://www.perennial-gardens.com/flower-articles/easy-care-perennials.htm

I don't advise getting a package of wildflower seeds. My neighbor did that and what she got.. well, I would call them weeds. None of them were very big or colorful, either. "Wildflowers" depends where you live. I've got lots of foxglove, bleeding heart, honeysuckle, nasturtiums.. Google "cottage garden", that might be the style you're looking for, and there will be sites with flower suggestions. :)
