What should I major in if I want to work with animals?

  • Before coming into college i was stuck on becoming a vet, however I am struggling to pass Chemistry and thinking i should change my major (zoology) all together. I'm just not sure what else i can do working with animals

  • Answer:

"Work with animals" is a pretty vague goal. I worked with animals for many years - as a kid on a farm. My daughter works with animals every day - as a clerk in a major pet store. My friend works with animals all the time - as an owner of three dogs, rabbits, cats, and other pets, plus she grooms animals for extra cash. If you cannot handle chemistry, you are probably not cut out to be a veterinarian. Have you looked into the education requirements for a vet tech? If you don't want to work at a pet store, a dog kennel, or other retail environment (where no degree is required), then you need to figure out what kind of job you really want - and what kind of education is required. Or, do it the opposite way - figure out what kind of courses you are able to take and pass. Get a degree in biology, zoology, etc. Or get a 4-year degree for veterinary technologists or a 2-year degree for veterinary technicians. Then try to find a job with the degree you earned. Either way, you need to think ahead, do some research, establish some written goals (not just dreams in your head - write them down!), and work toward your goals. Good Luck... J
