What is a clinical position?

What position do I shift to for these notes? And what note is it?

  • http://i48.tinypic.com/oscsnl.jpg For the notes that aren't for first position. I think these notes are in fourth position? A classmate said it was 3rd position. (If it is, where does start position start?) I'd also like to know the finger placements in the position. Is it just the same as like in first position, you just move your hand? If you can answer any of these I'd be VERY grateful. I have an audition and we have to figure out this piece by ourselves. Once again, thank you VERY much! :D

  • Answer:

The blue notes are in fourth position. The printed fingering shows third position for the D and F# while someone has written in a fingering that has you staying in first position for those and shifting straight into fourth for the B. You can do it either way. In fourth position the fingers are basically like they are in first position only the notes are a bit closer together.
