Could I put in food coloring to my henna paste to make the tattoo darker?

No...it's impossible for food dye molecules to penetrate the skin like the henna dye molecule can...the food dye molecules are just too big and would not mask the henna color. Anyone that says otherwise, they are just either lying to you are don't know what they are talking about. This applies also to anyone who says black henna leaves will turn the henna black. Black henna leaves do not exist and there's only one henna plant in existence. Please avoid anything labelled as "black" or "colored" henna as they often contain dangerous chemicals that can enter the bloodstream and cause severe reactions. Such chemicals that are found in these products include Rhodamine B, Sodium hydroxide (lye), Paraphenylenediamine, Malachite Green Oxalate and Nigrosine. If you place your henna on your hands and feet, it's possible to darken your henna stain to a "dark dark brown" or close to black. To do this you want to make sure you are using quality henna, also known as body art quality (BAQ) henna. You can typically buy this at specialty henna retailers, posted below. You need to make sure that once you mixed the henna (with a slightly acidic liquid preferably) that it sits out long enough to cure. It's best to let it sit 24-48 hours to make sure the dye has released. After applying the henna, you can get dark stains by keeping the henna on as long as possible, at least 12 hours for close to black. Using steam to re-moisten and heat the henna also helps make the stain darker, but please be careful when doing this to avoid burning yourself. To hold the henna on, you can use a lemon/sugar mix or medical tape. It's easiest to wrap the henna with medical tape and sleep with it overnight. To sleep with it overnight, be sure the area remains warm since heat helps release the dye, you can do this either with a glove or sock. It may seem like a long process, but this is the only way to get a natural dark henna "tattoo". It's impossible to achieve a black stain elsewhere on the body. Edit: I forgot to mention that there are alternatives to henna that are safe...such as alcohol-based body paints and a product called Jagua. These alcohol-based body paints, such as those created by Temptu, are used extensively in the movie industry to create realistic-looking temporary tattoos. They are superficial so they don't stain the skin but lay on top of, but because of its makeup it can last up to 10 days with good care. The only downside to these is that they can be a bit pricey, but they come in an arrange of colors. There's also a natural dye called Jagua, which comes from a fruit native to South America. It dyes a blue-ish black color, and can last 10-14 days with good care. The only downside to Jagua, however, is that because it comes from a fruit people are more prone to allergies (like strawberries) than with henna, so it's always recommended to do a test patch first. I'll post links to such products below. Good luck!
