Any nail salons that do RockStar Nails in San Diego?

Moms, do you go to nail salons and get fake nails?

  • I just cannot do it. After 2 of my friends (went to two different shops) and got serious life threatening infections (not to mention the waste of money IMO, for me)- I just can't justify it. I do my own nails with a cuticle filing device, cuticle cream, buffers etc. But I see SO many other moms with their nails done. IMO mine are just as good (although I file them at a length I can easily manage). Just curious, do you go to nail salons for the acrylics? What's your experience been?

  • Answer:

I used to here and there. I would go through spurts with them. I have always been a nail biter, so when I would get fed up enough to try and grow them I'd go get nails so I couldn't bit them. But then they'd be so destroyed by the time they grew long enough that I'd have to trim them right down again or they'd break off. I think the longest I ever had them consistently was 6 months and that was probably 3 years ago. I never had any problems with them though.

Nope. I'm almost 26 years old and still a biter. My fingernails are perpetually stubby and not painted because it would look silly and I'd pick it off anyways.

I don't anymore, but i did for 2 years previously. I got them taken off about 3 years ago. I never had any trouble with mine. No infections, no cuts. I stopped for a couple of reasons. First, i hated the maintenance. It's recommended for acrylics that you get a new set once a month and then a fill every two weeks (to fill the gap from your growing nails). I never got the fill...only went to get new sets once a month but even that was grating. Secondly, the cost was awful. A new set, for me, cost $40. If i had gotten a fill, that would've cost $20. So $60 a month...for nails. Lastly, my husband hated them and thought they looked super fake. And in his defense, he was pretty right in that opinion. I had them taken off and my real nails were ruined from lack of sunlight. They were soft and tore incredibly easily. Now they're back to being natural and completely healthy and i'm happy with them. I still go to do a monthly manicure ($15) to keep them looking alright (i've always had a problem with managing them), but that's it. Not for the types that i used. I used both pink and white powder as well as tips that were adhered. After a month of my nails growing, and after having them shortened, there were no tips left to them at all and they needed to be started from scratch. Not to mention the fact that even when i did go the rare 2 or more months without replacing them, they were incredibly brittle. I've never heard of anybody going a few months without getting a new set. But i guess different technicians give different opinions.

I had acrylic nails starting when I was 15 and went in every 2 weeks, religiously, for a fill in. I had them until I was about 20, when I got laid off and had more important things to spend unemployment money on. I went to the salon about 3 weeks ago to get my eyebrows waxed and decided to start getting my nails done again (after 5 years). I'm not really sure why...I just felt like it. They're not absurdly long in length and $15 every two weeks is completely affordable. Heck, it's ALOT cheaper than how much I was spending on cigarettes before I quit. In regards to CDT's answer...there is no need to have a new set put on every month. You can go months or even years without getting a new set, just fill ins, if you take care of them properly.

I went once about 6 years ago. I got fake nails put on and messed them up within a week. I guess I am not girlie enough to manage fake nails. I won't do it again, for me it is a waste of money. It does look nice on other people, though.

Not now. From 16-18 I kept them done. Then I got them done for my sister's wedding in 2008. Last time I had them done was 2009 when I got married. I bite my nails and at this point I think my nails are too short to even put acrylics on.

No. I have never understood why anyone would spend their money on that. I do file and buff my nails, but frankly, very long nails just get in my way. I keep mine at a medium length, and I never use nail polish.

nooo i just cut mine short and paint them pretty colours... I had them done once and I just kept scratching my kids by accident and couldn't wash up or anything properly so I just keep them short and pretty now, my partner prefers shorter nails too

I hardly wear makeup, so no I'm not paying to keep my nails looking manicured all the time. I get manicures for weddings, but that's only when I'm in the bridal party.
