To change your name in the UK, do you have to be a UK citizen?
-
...Or is it enough that I'm a EU (European Union) citizen? I just got divorced, but I immigrated from Germany and unfortunately I can't go back there just to change my name back to my maiden name, so I was wondering if it's possible to do it here. I still have my German passport, it's universal and so I have no need for an English one.

Answer:
Technically, since any EU citizen is allowed to live anywhere in Europe, there should definitely be a way for you to legally change your name. However, since in Germany it's impossible to legally change your name in general, Germany will probably decide to veto the whole thing once they find out, thus making it impossible for you to change your name without giving up German citizenship or at least obtaining an UK passport. I recommend you to get an English passport anyway, no matter if you end up going through with this or not, that way there won't be any issues like this in the future.

Linda, you can solve this yourself with the power of your brain. I hope. If a German citizen can change her name in the U-kay, then she can use this name change document, go to the nearest German consulate, and tell them: I want a new German passport in my new name! The consulate will look at her, point to the door, and tell her to get lost and then hug herself! A British authority cannot tell the German government what to do. You would have to be a British citizen before you can change your name in Great Britain and get a British passport in your name. I have done the same in the U.S.: I have a U.S. passport in my new name, and a German (and Swedish) passport in my old name. Neither the Germans nor the Swedes give a f*ck what the Americans is concerned. So I have two names and three passports, all legally. In plain German: nee, das geht überhaupt gar nicht.
