Can anyone fully explain the prejudice behind cross breeds v pedigree?
-
Don't just go listing the pros and cons, I know the pros and cons. I mean why do people continually and naively brave the front that ''mutts'' aren't worth a dime and pedigrees are something special. I think too many people relate cross-breeds or ''mutts'' with BYB's. After all, my MUTT lived until she was 19 years old. Yeah, unhealthy one she was? Opinions please, let the prejudice and naivety begin :)

Answer:
mutts are a dime a dozen in shelters and rescues they can make wonderful pets.. the issue is when people want to purposly breed them. There's just NO logical reason to make more! now, that being said.. unless are purebred is PROPERLY bred- show/working parents, proper genetic health tests done, research on the pedigree, etc.. the pups really are not worth that much either. True value is all the work and expense put into the breeding to ensure pups are genetically healthy and define what the breed is suppossed to be.

I am sick of this stupidity. NO ONE has a.problem with MUTTS except for one or two idiots here who are just here to stir up problems. People have a problem with the slime that purposefully breed MUTTS to slap stupid names on them and sell them to suckers. I have 2 mutts of my own and I love them. I see all dogs as dogs no matter what the breed or mix. I don't care honestly and I love all dogs equally. But the owners who think their mutts are better than mine because they got them from a store or "breeder" and the breeders who breed mutts are irritating and I don't think they deserve a place on this planet.
♥Domino♥ Death to IGNORANCE
I wouldn't say that there is a prejudice as such, there are many great pets out there who are not pedigree, be they from unregistered breeds (jack russell), deliberate crossbreeds (lurchers) or from 'happy accidents'. Most people however do have a problem with people intentionally breeding 'designer dogs' and making out theat they are somehow special or rare breeds, and fleecing buyers out of ridiculous amounts of money. Plus once they realise the ycan make a lot of money otu of doing this, their dogs switch form being pets (if they ever were in the first place) to non-stop puppy making machines

What's the point even trying? You obviously have your own ideas about this, so I'm not going to waste my time. Just for the record, I'm not against any (most!!) dog. I am totally against BYBs who churn out poorly bred puppies, sell at huge prices to the gullible and especially when there are Shelters full of deserving dogs right now. You 'was lucky' with your 19 year old.......... for every one like this, there would probably be 100s that don't survive, without a lot of veterinary trips. ps There are some people who actually prefer to buy a purebred because they look the way they do, and would be able to do the specific job they were bred to do.

The BYBs and puppy mills that churn out the mixed breeds are the problem .I don't have a problem with mixed breed dogs .But i do with the BYBs and puppy mills . Some Mixed Breed dogs are bred as they are good working dogs ,but that is few and far Between . Your mixed Breed lived a long time but turn this around and look at all the mixed breeds that are euthanized daily at shelters.

What the hell are you talking about? I have never came across someone who hates mutts, not here or in person. People hate the people who purposely breed mutts, not hate the dogs. Yes, most breeding of mutts is completely useless. Breeders should be breeding to a specific breed standard to better that breed.

Well......the idea that "'mutts' aren't worth a dime" is not so naive -- after all, it's the pedigree that creates market value. People who pay a ton for their dog need to believe they got something better than what we got for free.

Good God this is so old. Nobody hates mutts. People are against all of the bums who breed mutts just to make a profit. The dogs serve no working purposes and yet they sell these mutts for $800. People are against breeders who breed pure bred dogs just for quick cash too. Your whole post seems pretty ignorant so I'm not even going to waste my time going into further detail.

I've always found that mutts were better dogs; smarter, healthier, than purebreds. I think many people look at it from a classist perspective: "the bluebloods" versus the "commoners." This is sad indeed. When they're lying in a wooden box at the end of their lives, there really isn't much of a difference between the "purebred" and the "mutt," whether you're talking about people or dogs, is there! ..

For starters, the population of dogs is already way too high. Every shelter I've visited has been overloaded with dogs that wouldn't be there if people where being responsible enough to spay/neuter their dogs and if puppy mills shut down completely. Heck, we should stop -all- breeding of dogs except for working dogs till the population can get on a more manageable level. Second, you can't predict a mutt. They can get all the bad traits of both parents, all good traits, or a mix of both. Because of their unpredictable, they aren't really for beginner dog owners. With labs, for example, you can prepare for hip problems and epilepsy -before- they develop, but with a Labrador poodle mix they might get it, or they might not. You don't know and you can't really prepare. Third: I personally don't care if a dog is pedigree, so long as they are healthy, stable, and able to work to their full potential, and where bred with more traits in mind then cuteness. Like Alaskan huskies, especially ones for the sled trail. Most are not purebred dogs, but they tend to be bred to survive cold temperatures, have a lot of endurance, speed, and intelligence. You will often see greyhound, lab, GSD, and collie in the Alaskan husky mixes because of this. However, the "pedigree" version of a husky is for looks only and wouldn't hold up well to pulling a sled. Or the GSD. The AKC standard requires a sloped back that makes it hard for them to walk, but a GSD bred for working has a straight back. In such cases I actually DESPISE AKC purebred dogs, and would rather get the working version, even if it is a mutt. So yeah, there are four types of mutts -Bred by accident ((dog got lose/ feral dog breeding/ shelter didn't spay on time)) -Bred by BYB's and puppymills. Tend to be low quality and sickly. -Bred to work: Best quality mutt you can get. -Failed bred to work: A mutt that didn't meet the standards required for line of work and gets sold off as a companion pet.
