My dog has really, really bad separation anxiety?

My dog has bad separation anxiety, any advice would be appreciated!?

  • He is a 2 year old yorkiepom (yorkie X Pomeranian) and sleeps in a dog cage down stairs. He has been trained to associate this with bedtime since he was a puppy, but recently (the past 3 months) he has become particularly attached to me, not so much the rest of my family, but this has caused problems. He cries at night, he has become aggressive to our other dogs if I give them attention, he pees with excitement when he sees me etc. I am so far ignoring him, but it's getting to the stage where the family aren't getting any sleep because of his noise at night! Please help..

  • Answer:

Yes there are several medications approved for canine separation anxiety, a couple even by the FDA. Talk to your veterinarian about your options, a couple include: amitriptyline, alprazolam, clmoipramine. Some of these are the same, or similar to human medications. (anti-depressants, OCD, etc) Some of these are advised with concurrent behavior modification (training) Best of luck

you could try placing a piece of clothing or a blanket that has your smell on it in the animals bedding so it then can get the comfort that your still around even though your not.

I advise you to go to the dog whisperer web site. He has lots of information on different dog behavior problems.
