Mac user switching to Windows, want a laptop...?
-
I am a long time Mac user, I got so used to using my Mac for years and years and years until eventually, part of the hardware messed up and I couldn't use it. Of course, I could easily get a replacement part but I decided to borrow my friends old laptop in the mean time. I did a full factory restore of it and realised something I'd been missing out on with my mac. The third party support. It took me around 5 minutes to find all sorts of programmes that I wanted, that all worked as desired. On my Mac, I'd spend forever looking for a half decent one that either required you to pay, or wasn't supported on my old OS (tiger). Anyway, so this old Windows laptop is on its way out, the screen is hanging off, I can't play Minecraft for more than 20 minutes without risking overheating and automatic shut down. So my question to you, people at Yahoo answers, when buying a new Windows laptop, what specs should I desire? Let's say, it's going to get a little more strain than most casual home users. I'll want to run a few DAWs, sometimes rewiring them into eachother. I'll also probably want to do some photo editing and MAYBE some light video editing in the future. I basically just want something to last for a good few years, that is fast and doesn't give me a headache when I put a bit of pressure on it. I do apologise in advance if this sort of thing should be common knowledge, but as a Mac user, I am a sheltered soul, I've had Apple make all my decisions, it hasn't prepared me for the real technological world. Oh also, I'm looking for my budget to be kinda low, £400-£600 maybe. PC-Specialist seems very interesting and appealing to me right now, thought?

If you don't need to carry it around, you'll get a lot more for your money with your desktop PC. Laptops use slower mobile chips, are barely upgradable, most have small, slow hard drives (less than 7000 RPM), and fast laptops require periodic cleaning of vents to avoid overheating. If you can't build your own desktop, my recommendation is Alienware PCs, they're expensive, but you'll see what a fast gaming PC should have. You can also check DIY PC buying guides in webpages like tomshardware and sharkyextreme to learn more about good PC parts. I have always used a desktop PC with 2 monitors, and always carry a slow netbook with me that I rarely use (I use mostly my smartphone).
