IPhone 4 got stolen, how can I track it faster?

So my little brothers iPhone 4 got stolen during 4th period yesterday at school, and we have the "find iPhone" app so I was tracking it yesterday but I was at work so I couldnt go search for it Til later around 7pm...we tracked it down outside a house but I am not sure if the person lives there for sure, we did go and know at the house, but the lady said that there are no kids living there, idk if I believe her. I lost the track because the person turned off the phone, I am still waiting to see if they turn it on and we can track it again...we had disconnected the line for a bit, but we connected it again so we can try and locate it...right now we are gonna go to the school and talk to the principal and campus police to see what they can do, but does anyone have any tips on what we should do?? I wish there was a was to turn on the phone by itself lol...can someone please help us, has anyone ever got their iPhone stolen and was able to locate it and retrieve it??

Answer:
At this point, I would use Find My iPhone to remote lock or remote wipe, so it will do it automatically and file a police report with the info you already have.
