What are some healthy foods to eat in Japan?

  • im going on a student exchange trip to japan here soon. i am vegetarian, but i do eat fish and some chicken. what are some healthy foods that i can eat while im there, and what foods should i avoid? i would like to avoid ALL red meat, anything deep fried, and anything with high sugar content (besides fruit of course). just a list of healthy and unhealthy foods would be great, and useful phrases to say (eg. "i'm vegetarian," "I don't eat red meats", ect.) any help and advice would be great. thanks!

I think Japan's noodles and mami are the healthiest. It is your choice to add more veggies to make it more healthier.

They don't have the notion of meat being "white/red" in Japan. Do grasshoppers count as white meat? Natto is jammed packed with Vitamin B, due to it being a fermented product. Not everyone goes in for natto, but I like it. I guess you don't want yummy Japanese fried food like tempura, karage and tonkatsu. Why not just live a little while you are in Japan? Eating Japanese food certainly doesn't seem to do the Japanese any harm.

There is no list like that because it depends on each person what food is really counted as healthy. Besides, there are few vegetarians in Japan.

Try 納豆(Natto) that is kinda rotting beans. Its called "meat on a farm" and very good for your health. We eat them at breakfast.
