What does normal T4 with high TSH mean?
-
I have been taking a replacement pill for hypothyroidism since age 7. At that age I had normal T4 but high TSH levels (I think) and they somehow deduced that I had a preclinical thyroid condition. As I got older my dose increased to 125mcg, where it stayed for years. About a year ago (I am 21 now) I began to get fatigued after eating and decided to check my thyroid levels again. I had a very slightly higher than normal TSH level and so increased my dose.. I ended up settling at 150mcg. and when I got my blood drawn 4 months ago, everything looked normal. Just went in for a blood test last week to check if 150 is still the appropriate level for me. My T4 was normal, but my TSH is very high 9.791 (normal range is .55-4.78). I am not feeling overly fatigued and haven't experienced any of the other symptoms typical of hypothyroidism. Does anyone have a better idea of what this means?

Answer:
WOW! That is crazy ... going up that high w/ regular monitoring of meds! I hope that you are not missing doses ...EVER! Here are suggestions: Add Cytomel. Also take Selenium, Zinc, BComplex, D3, Fish Oil. If you do not already, you should: take 1st thing, & on empty stomach, & not eat or have coffee for 1/2 hr. If you take Calcium, Acid Reducer, Iron ... wait 3 hrs before doing so. BTW, 'Norm' is .3 - 3 w/ most feeling best at < 2. God bless

You have grown up so your dosage would need to be adjusted. Your muscle mass has changed, your circulation is greater, etc. Sounds perfectly normal for your situation. You are not yet at an ideal dose.
