How much bacteria growth occurs in reused water bottles?

Can you put citrus slices in a bottle water and refridgerate for about a week and not have bacteria growth?

  • I have recently been placed on the Night Shift as all of my auditors have left and I will be doing this for a month. I want to drink water while on this shift, but water can be bland, especially for extended periods. With that said, I wanted to prepack some plastic water bottles with lemon and lime slices, but wonder how safe it would be to leave those in my office fridge for no more than 5 days or would I need to freeze them and take them out per day to prevent bacteria growth in the water and ruining my healthy goals?

  • Answer:

Whole fruits last for five days. Sliced fruits last for five hours. Upon exposing the actual fruit to air, after a short while it starts turning colors. It may be fine in water in the fridge but only spare a few hours before the rotting dilutes the water and turns to spoiled flavors.
